A Raising in the Sun – May 3 to May 19

The Youngers: Walter Lee, Ruth, their son Travis, Walter’s sister Beneatha, and his mother, Mama, are a proud Black family struggling through poverty in rundown two-bedroom apartment on the South Side of Chicago. The family is about to receive an insurance check for $10,000. This money comes from the recently deceased Mr. Younger’s life insurance policy. Each of the adult members of the family has an idea as to what he or she would like to do with this money. Mama wants to buy a house to fulfill a dream she shared with her husband. Walter Lee would rather use the money to invest in a liquor store, believing whole-heartedly that the investment will solve the family’s financial problems forever. Ruth agrees with Mama however, and hopes that she and Walter can provide more space and opportunity for their son. And Beneatha wants to use the money for her medical school tuition. When the money finally arrives, decisions are made that change the trajectory of each of their lives forever. A Raisin in the Sun is a brief glimpse into the trials and tribulations that African Americans endured during the 1950s, told from the most intimate perspective — the love of family.

“A Raisin in the Sun” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc.
