Since the office was created by the Maryland Constitution of 1851, it has grown from a comptroller and one clerk to an agency of over 1,200 employees. The core operations for the Comptroller of Maryland are carried out by six departments overseeing 25 Divisions.
These Divisions and their personnel are necessary to carry out the vast operations of the Agency in service to all residents, taxpayers, businesses, and other state agencies.
